Thoughts On Next-Generation Broadband Wireless Internet Access

This post was triggered by a slow day of significant news about Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX. So I dug into my archives of "things I should write about" and found mention of these two press releases from BelAir Networks (press release 1, press release 2). That triggered a still-frustrating memory of something a colleague said to me recently to the effect that "Remember, I told you that city Wi-Fi networks wouldn't work".

First, I'll discuss the latter point. Yeah, the EarthLink-funded Metropolitan Wi-Fi networks did fail. I think that was mostly a failure of technology - that the technology employed was nowhere near adequate to the challenge. My main criticism of that technology, and in particular a criticism of Tropos Networks' systems is that using omnidirectional antennas to provide coverage on that scale just wasn't going to work. A close second major criticism of Tropos was that trying to do backhaul "in band" with your access was competing with your users - bad design. So yeah, if the technology simply isnt' up to the business model, you're gonna fail.

But what my colleague... and just about everyone else in the entire wireless and Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX industry doesn't understand was that "Metropolitan Wi-Fi" was about a lot more than just that particular implementation, business model, etc. Wireless was fundamentally changed as a result, but that change was subtle and almost entirely unnoticed. But the press releases cited above help illustrate the following observations about "Next Generation BWIA":

Metropolitan Wi-Fi systems illustrated a new network architecture - outdoor microcell deployment. Put a "cell site" on a streetlight, for example, and cover an area not much bigger than a city block. This idea was pioneered by Metricom in their Ricochet system and is now being quietly adopted for a number of networks - for power monitoring, Metropolitan Wi-Fi systems, etc.
Lower power wireless subsystems (don't need to "blast" when you're covering smaller areas) means that it's become practical to "self-power" via solar panels and batteries. That lowers the cost of deployment radically.
Mesh backhaul is entirely practical and well-proven now beginning with Metricom Ricochet and proceeding through current-day Metropolitan Wi-Fi systems that use focused, not omnidirectional, antenna systems to assure reliable mesh backhaul.
Spectrum choice isn't limited to cellular, Wi-Fi, or anything at all. One of the most impressive things about BelAir Networks is that their systems built around the idea of interchangeable / multiple radios and antennas, all managed by a central antenna switching system and router / switch. BelAir units have already been deployed to provide cellular coverage, and (deliciously, ironically) providing backhaul to that cellular node via license-exempt spectrum (yeah, it IS that reliable).
The microcell network architecture means that you can reuse spectrum very efficiently, and make good, reliable use of license-exempt spectrum. When you combine it with better antenna technology, the results are amazing. BelAir uses switched panel antennas - that's relatively cheap, practical, and effective. But even better is the phased-array technology developed by Wavion Wireless Networks.
The sum total of all of this is that we haven't seen ANYTHING yet in Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX / Wi-Fi / Zigbee, etc. Someone is going to get it right and implement BWIA using all of this - multitude of spectrum choices, saturation coverage using microcell network architecture and phased-array antenna systems, opportunistic use of licensed and license-exempt spectrum, and a business model that takes full advantage of all of it. I haven't seen it quite yet (all together), but I'll know it, and write about it, when I do finally see it.

Perhaps more importantly, the future of BWIA certainly doesn't "belong" to wireless telephony technology, including "LTE / 4G"... or Mobile WiMAX... or Wi-Fi... or any one particular technology. We're going to see a confluence, and continued diversity of systems, and continued experimentation, evolution, and revolution in BWIA.

Yes, I'm totally confident that I will see systems (plural!) like what I describe. One thing my more than a decade of writing about BWIA has taught me is that when I notice a confluence of factors like the above, much smarter people than me have noticed them years before and have already been quietly putting money and talent into such an idea behind the scenes.

4) Tom Evslin made a great point in one of his articles - No More Landlines. It's not that there's no inherent future or utility in Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). It's just that the wireline (and wireless) telephony carriers have this sense of entitlement after over a century of a guaranteed rate of return and the ability to hold customers hostage. But increasingly, the math doesn't work with more and more people abandoning landlines in favor of wireless telephones, leaving telephony infrastructure idling. The telephony carriers want to continue to be compensated for their "stranded" investments, but the only way to do that is to soak the remaining customers even more, and a vicious cycle was started years ago with the price of landline service rising, and customers saying "at this price, I really don't need this".

The trouble is... the infrastructure that businesses rely on - T-1 lines, are largely paid for out of revenues by the customers that are abandoning landlines. So, the FCC has a hell of a mess on its hands dealing with the inevitable transition to wireline infrastructure that isn't supported by voice revenues.

5) I'll take Evslin's observation one step further to make the same observation that a lot of customers are going to make the same calculation with cable television services... for the same $50/month or so that they're paying for cable, they can "rent" Netflix on-demand movies, rent television episodes from iTunes, watch free downloadable content from YouTube or the networks, etc. The cable companies are going to find their infrastructure investments largely stranded as people abandon video services and voice services in favor of broadband-only. Expect the cable television industry to come crying to the FCC about "customer abandonment" issues right behind the wireline telephony companies.

6) The US Government wants a national, interoperable, two way radio system that will integrate local, state, federal, all manner of public safety agencies. That's easily done:

Buy Nextel - there's the US terrestrial network.
Buy Iridium - there's the US extended-area / worldwide network.
Buy the iDen and Iridium intellectual property (both from Motorola?) and "open source" it for the purpose of incentivizing other vendors to make access devices to US Government requirements.
Sunset all the commercial users.
After the sunset, operate Nextel and Iridium's networks as federally-operated public safety communications systems and very selectively grant access to commercial users that have a good reason to be on them - Red Cross, Salvation Army, tugboat companies, etc. Add an encryption system with a smart card that has to receive an authorizion signal every so often so that stolen / compromised devices are "aged out" of the system. Both systems already have this, but it's probably not that robust and is designed around the requirements of "creating billable events" - the Government's requirements are a bit different.
Invest the money that you would have spend building yet another two-way radio and satellite communications system into hardening, improving the coverage, improving the reliability, growing the user base, etc.
Do the math and the timeline, FCC. There is no conceivable way the nationwide emergency network the US Goverment wants and needs is going to happen "organically", "incentivized", partnerized, etc. If you do it the way currently envisioned, it will take decades, cost tens of $Billions, and at best will be loosely coupled and never in sync between factions because they're sections of the network are being built piecemeal. Over time, migrate it to P25 standards if that's desired... but it's arguable that P25 scales to nationwide, and Nextel's already figured out how to do that with iDen.

Nextel and Iridium aren't broadband-capable, and can't really evolve to be. If you want / need that, pay Clearwire to put up Mobile WiMAX gear in parallel with developing their network, but the government gear is on a government-only band. Or the government could just buy back all the 2.3 GHz licenses.

Last seen at our labs just before its unveiling in Berlin at the HP Connecting Your World event was the HP TouchSmart IQ506 PC, which made its way to our labs again for a full review as promised. But first, you might want to take a trip down memory lane and look at the IQ506's predecessor, the IQ770 PC , which while nice, didn't quite evoke the excitement and appeal of the newer IQ506. It's good to know that given the time span of about a year, HP has done a minor miracle in shrinking the previous design into something much more compact and stylish, something which we quite like and is sure to appeal to consumers too.

Besides shrinking the size down into a more compact package, HP has also upped the touch screen panel size of the IQ506 to 22-inches of glorious screen realty. Furthermore, HP also promises 4GB of memory for every variant that will be available on the market, which in our books makes the newer IQ506 that much sweeter (or powerful whichever way you look at it). What’s more, System Restore only enables you to go back a maximum of a few days to a previous clean configuration. Deep Freeze, on the other hand, enables you to protect and preserve clean computer configurations so that you can always restore your PC in the event of a major crash. No matter what changes you make to your computer, you can simply restart to eradicate all changes and reset the computer to its original state. The program is useful for anyone who has suffered software conflicts, operating system corruption and virus attacks.

After the simple installation procedure, you are asked whether you want to activate Deep Freeze, which will run a quick scan to “freeze” the computer in that state. You can then use the computer as you would normally but every time it is turned off, it will be returned to its original state. If at a later date you decide you want to make a permanent change you can temporarily disable Deep Freeze. The positive side of Deep Freeze is that it doesn’t impede the use of your computer in anyway. You can mess around with your PC as much as you want, installing and reinstalling programs and even deleting essential Windows files without worrying about the consequences. The downside is that if you forget to deactivate it, any work you’ve done or any essential changes you have made will be lost for good. It’s therefore advisable to save essential files or documents on an external drive when Deep Freeze is activated. You can also save to a special “thawed” section of your hard drive that is exempt from restoration.

Whilst useful for those who share a computer or administer a network of computers, Deep Freeze is somewhat impractical on a lone PC. However, if you like to save all your data to external sources, it’s a pretty solid assurance that your PC won’t be rendered useless by a major crash. Deep Freeze is currently available in two editions for Windows, Mac OS X and Windows Server with a Linux edition in the pipeline

Google launches internet browser

Google is launching an open source web browser to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

The browser is designed to be fast, and to cope with the next generation of web applications that rely on graphics and multimedia.

Called Chrome, it will launch as a beta for Windows machines in 100 countries, with Mac and Linux versions to come.

"We realised... we needed to completely rethink the browser," said Google's Sundar Pichai in a blog post.

The new browser will help Google take advantage of developments it is pushing online in rich web applications that are challenging traditional desktop programs.

Google has a suite of web apps, such as Documents, Picasa and Maps which offer functionality that is beginning to replace offline software.

"What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build," Mr Pichai, VP Product Management, wrote.

The launch of a beta version of Chrome on Tuesday evening (UK time) will be Google's latest assault on Microsoft's dominance of the PC business. The firm's Internet Explorer program dominates the browser landscape, with 80% of the market.

Those already in the browser space were quick to respond to the news. Writing in his blog, John Lilly, chief executive of Mozilla was sanguine about the new rival in the browsersphere.

"It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here - their business is the web, and they’ve got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better."

Chrome will be a browser optimized for the things that they see as important, and it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves," he wrote.

He welcomed the competition and said collaboration between Mozilla and Google on certain projects would continue.

Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, was more bullish.

"The browser landscape is highly competitive, but people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips, respects their personal choices about how they want to browse and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online," he said in a statement.For Nate Elliot, an analyst with Jupiter Research, entering the browser market is an obvious next move for Google.

"This is a much bigger undertaking than providing a Google toolbar but it feels like the natural next step," he said. But competing with the established browser names could be harder, he thinks.

"Mozilla's Firefox is very well respected and yet it commands less than 20% of the browser market which just shows how hard it is to overtake an incumbent although Google does have almost unparallelled ability to promote it to almost the entire online audience," he said.

Chrome is now available for download.

Many notebooks on the market have us reaching for the power cord after just a few hours of continuous use, but HP's latest announcement promises to let you stay away from the mains supply for quite a while longer. Using with an optional ultra-capacity battery, the company's new HP EliteBook 6930p offers up to 24 hours of battery runtime, a feat achieved by a combination of the battery design itself and energy saving components like LED displays and Intel® solid-state hard drives (SSD). Good news for all of us who have ever wandered around an airport looking for a socket.

“All-day computing has been the holy grail of notebook computing,” said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager, Notebook Global Business Unit, HP. “With the HP EliteBook 6930p, customers no longer have to worry about their notebook battery running out before their work day is over.”

The magical 24 hour figure was arrived at using an industry-standard benchmark test and in terms of power-saving components, the company's release states that the "HP Illumi-Lite LED display improves battery run time by up to 4 hours compared to traditional LCD displays, while the Intel SSD provides up to a 7 percent increase in battery life compared to traditional hard drives."

The EliteBook 6930 features a 14.1-inch diagonal widescreen display (the mercury-free Illumi-Lite LED is optional) and offers a number of other carrots to mobile professionals, namely a lightweight configuration that starts at only 4.7 pounds (2.1 kilograms), a durable inner magnesium shell, a shock-resistant hard drive and a spill-resistant keyboard. The unit also meets MIL-STD 810F military-standards for environmental reliability, operation at extreme temperatures and withstanding vibration and high humidity.

The new Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA SSDs (for which HP is a launch customer) are expected to be available in October.

Gateway on Monday released its first 16-inch laptops, the MC7801u and the MC7803u. With a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, 16-inch (and 18-inch) models are beginning to emerge.

Unlike traditional 16:10 laptop displays, a 16:9 screen matches the ratio of movies and HD content. Similar to the redesigned MacBook, the display on Gateway's MC series laptops features a glossy glass overlay that runs edge to edge. The 16-inch screen features a 1366x768 resolution; you'll need to bump up to an 18-inch model for 1080p playback.

The $950 MC7801u features a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T5800 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 64-bit Vista Home Premium, and a 320GB hard drive. So what don't you get on this sub-$1,000 laptop? You miss out Intel's latest Centrino 2 platform, and the laptop relies on integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.

A second model in the 16-inch MC series, the $1,000 MC7803u, will feature a dedicated 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics card. Providing the MC models with a distinctive look, a thin pleather strip runs down the middle of the lid. The lower-end MC7801u features a burgundy lid, and the higher-end MC7803u features a black lid.

Other features include HDMI and VGA ports, backlit keyboard and multimedia controls, Webcam, DVD burner, Draft N Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, and ExpressCard and media card slots.

Visiting card

Visiting cards also known as calling cards first appeared in China in the 15th century, and in Europe in the 17th century. The footmen of aristocrats and of royalty would deliver these first European visiting cards to the servants of their prospective hosts solemnly introducing the arrival of their owners.

Visiting cards became an indispensable tool of etiquette, with sophisticated rules governing their use. The essential convention was that one person would not expect to see another person in their own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving their visiting card with the person at their home. Upon leaving the card, they would not expect to be admitted at first, but might receive a card at their own home in response. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home would not be unwelcome. On the other hand, if no card was forthcoming in return, or if a card were sent in an envelope, a personal visit was thereby discouraged. As an adoption from French and English etiquette, visiting cards became common amongst the aristocracy of Europe, and also in the United States. The whole procedure depended upon there being servants to open the door and receive the cards and it was, therefore, confined to the social classes which employed servants.

Some visiting cards included refined engraved ornaments and fantastic coats of arms. However, the standard form visiting card in the 19th century in the United Kingdom was a plain card with nothing more than the bearer's name on it. Sometimes the name of a gentlemen's club might be added, but addresses were not otherwise included.

The visiting card is no longer the universal feature of upper middle class and upper class life that it once was in Europe and North America. Much more common is the business card, in which contact details, including address and telephone number, are essential. This has led to the inclusion of such details even on modern domestic visiting cards, a practice endorsed by modern books of etiquette, such as Debrett's New Etiquette.

Among officers in the military, at least in the United States, the use of calling cards and the paying of social calls on superior officers is still customary. It is still somewhat common in the U.S. Navy and very common in the U.S. Marine Corps, which tends to be the most "traditional" of the U.S. Armed Services. The use of visiting cards is optional in the U.S. Army today and regulations state that "there should be no directives or requirements for individuals to purchase visiting cards". Current U.S. Marine Corps calling cards are 1.625 by 3.25 inches and are always plain white pasteboard; the traditional size, according to U.S. Army Regulations, is 1.5 by 3.25 inch
